Masterpieces in Miniature
An exhibit of exquisite miniature ships in unbelievable proportion
On exhibit in the Gould-Eddy Gallery of the Maritime Museum of San Diego, September 5, 2009 – May 31, 2010.
This fascinating exhibit further demonstrates the Maritime Museum of San Diego’s reputation as a place for the display of superbly crafted ship models. The visitor will see on display over forty miniature ships – some as much as 200 years old. The artists represented are model builders considered to be among the finest in the world – among them Donald McNarry and Lloyd McCaffery. This is truly a unique opportunity to view their works, as many of the models are held in private collections and have never before been seen by a broad audience. The scale employed and attention to detail is what makes these models things of wonder. Imagine being able to hold an accurately constructed miniature of HMS Victory in the palm of your hand! The exhibit also includes periodic demonstrations from modelers, a video of how to build a ship-in-a-bottle, and interpretative panels to give visitors of all ages an appreciation for these great works of art.
