Sea Chantey Festival 2013
August 4th, 2013 - 11:00am to 4:45pm on the upper deck of the Star of India. Included with Maritime Museum of San Diego admission.
Maritime Museum of San Diego is proud to host the 20th Annual Sea Chantey Fest featuring national, regional and local performers.
For centuries, sailor's have honed their shipboard skills to the cadence of songs recounting the adventure, tragedy and romance of life at sea. These "sea chanteys" come to life in a dramatic way preformed on board the majestic sailing ship Star of India.
This years festival brings an exciting mix of modern and traditional.
Jeff Pekarek released one of the most creative chantey recordings heard, Panamerican Shanty, which presented traditional chanteys woven into a 1930s-style detective story. When his group performed part of it at the Festival, it drew a big response. This year, he is premiering a "sequel" to the tale for us! He is also this year's solo "featured chanteyman" and will be performing some seldom heard traditional chanteys
Captain John Kraus and the Goers are developing a large following at festivals around the country and have been popular on Star of India; using instruments more associated with rock than with sailors, they bring a youthful and modern twist to traditional chanties. Also, by popular demand, John will again perform some traditional solo chanties.
